Architecture and Metaphor

Project:  Architectural Design Project

Institut:   Bauhaus Universität Weimar

What defines a constructural symbol of freedom? What significates freedom? How can one translate inner and outer freedom into a build structure? I pursued these ideas in the design for a community center in the governmental district of Berlin.

This project deals with the translation of symbols and thoughts into an architectural form.

A situationist game of different spatial qualities emerges; a game of outside and inside, from level to level. The dimensions of the building and the heights of the platforms are based on the size of the inner courtyards of the Bundestag. In a figurative sense, one could place the building into one of the courtyards and it would work like a connecting link within it. The material of glass conveys transparency and at the same time confusion due to the visual overlaps.

The Citizen forum should inspire to (self) discovery.

Floorplans of the community center

A path system

that defines its target points out of its own;

the path turns in a circle and becomes the opposite,

the movement actually becomes a dance.

Concept

The dimensions of the building and the heights of the platforms are based on the size of the inner courtyards of the Bundestag. In a figurative sense, one can put the building into a courtyard and it works like a connecting link within the Bundestag. In this way, the citizen himself is integrated into the Reichstag, making the governmental building a public place accessible for everyone. In order to perceive the civic centre as an autonomous space and to allow it greater importance, I have decided to place it on the open field next to the chancellery and to interpret the integration into one of the courtyards of the Bundestag as a metaphorical act.
